Outreach: A Call To Serve

BY: Quinton Green, NWA MLK Council Outreach Committee

March 12, 2020, many of our lives changed. Some were in school, while others were at work. On this day, many were told to gather what they needed in order to work from home for a couple of weeks. At that moment, life as we know it changed.

In the following months, the Council, along with the outreach committee met relentlessly to figure out different way we could serve the NWA community. In October of 2020, the Martin Luther King Council hosted the first annual COVID-19 and Voter Registration Drive. As many as 100 participants came and either got tested for COVID-19 or registered to vote. The following month, we were grateful to be able to fill a need by giving 10 Turkeys and Thanksgiving meals.

After a moment of thought and reflection on the successes of our drive and the give away, we knew that we had to continue our efforts. So in April of 2021, the council did its first COVID Vaccination clinic. This was a true effort and commitment of the community. With the help of the Community Clinic and the Roger-Lowell Chamber of Commerce, we were able to assist in providing over 100 shots to the people in the Northwest Arkansas area.

The outreach committee will continue in service to the community. We understand the call of being servant-leaders and also following the precedent set by Dr. Martin Luther King. However, we need you, the community. We need people to volunteer. We need people to commit themselves to giving. Whether in time, monetary donations, or a simple fist bump, we need these things to continue to serve our community. Even though the last two years were and have been challenging, we will continue to serve you.
